Let me start today’s log by stating that Thursday’s showcase was a great success. Fuck yeah 📈

A successful presentation starts with a successful setup. FilmGate volunteers helped me tape the screen to the wall; then, I was able to do the rest of the work myself. One challenge I didn’t anticipate in my preparation was cable management. Next time I go into an event, I want to plan my device and cable layouts ahead of time. The projector setup was awesome and there was enough space for 4 people to interact with the project at the same time.

Going through the footage recorded via my capture card has been fun. Next time, I should definitely try to capture audio too because silent footage feels like it came from a security camera.

I totally made a funny joke here and you can’t even hear it

On the bright side, since there’s no audio, I’m able to speed up the footage without it being obvious and make the experience seem way smoother. Mark my words: someday, it will be.

The joy people get from a novel experience is very real

The energy ball colors are supposed to be random but it certainly seemed like they weren’t. I need to investigate whether that needs to be fixed. Case in point: the following clip shows me unsuccessfully trying to help my friend avoid getting a pink energy ball by repeatedly resetting the scene via mouse click.

Went about 30 minutes before anyone told me to zip up my fly

I never did get around to masking the visible area to account for body tracking limitations. Honestly, the fact that I’m still relying on the Kinect v2 for my tracking is an entire limitation in and of itself. Reviewing some of my captured footage, the Kinect mistook water bottles and scarfs for open hands. Disgusting. Once I release V3 of this project’s source, I’m seriously gonna move on to a better camera and tracking setup.

In other news, I finally announced this site’s existence via Instagram post today. Sure, the link has been in my account’s bio for probably over a month, but I doubt anybody looks over there. To all my new visitors, mom, dad, friends, FilmGate, EDGLRD, technical and non-technical, thanks for all the support! I do this because I love it.
